Japan: Where Ancient Tradition Meets Modern Wonder

Japan is a captivating blend of timeless heritage and futuristic innovation where serene temples stand beside neon-lit skyscrapers, and quiet tea ceremonies coexist with bullet trains that blur across the landscape. From the mystical forests of Kyoto to the bustling streets of Tokyo, the country invites travelers into a world rich with culture, cuisine, and discovery.

Itinerary

26th and 27th September: Days 1 & 2: – Departure from Cyprus and arrival in Osaka

Konichiwa!!! Welcome to Japan!

We begin in Osaka, Japan’s third-largest city and basically the country’s kitchen, famous for its street food, bold personality, and laid-back vibe compared to Tokyo.

After landing in the afternoon, our driver will be waiting for us upon arrival to transfer us straight to our hotel.

After settling in, we will head out for our first wander into the neon-filled area of Dotonbori and from there, on to what will undoubtedly be the first of many extraordinary meals during our time in Japan.

Accommodation: Hotel Vista Osaka Namba or similar

28th September:

Day 3 – Osaka

After breakfast at our hotel, we will start our day with a visit to Osaka Castle. Surrounded by a spacious park, the meticulously restored, five-storey, 16th century-built castle, offers museum exhibits and panoramic city views, making it perhaps, the most famous site in the city.

The second part of the day, is yours to explore as you see fit, with the city offering an array of options. You can snack away in Kuromon Market, or explore Nipponbashi Den-Den Town, Osaka’s premier electronics and anime area. Alternatively, you can go for a wander and some shopping in the vibrant, street-fashion district of Amerikamura, with its eclectic mix of street art, vintage boutiques and quirky cafes.

Whatever you choose to do, at 17:30, we will regroup and head to a different side of town, where we will meet our guide for a food tour of some of the most authentic places around the alleys of the retro Shinsekai district. Here, we will feast and drink at 5 unique and delicious food establishments (13 dishes), including market stalls, standing bars, izakayas and restaurants.

In the evening, with a rather full stomach, we suggest taking a walk to digest and returning back towards Dotonbori, near our hotel, for some last drinks, some karaoke and an undoubtedly memorable Osaka-style night out.

Accommodation: Hotel Vista Osaka Namba or similar

29th September:

Day 4 – Hiroshima

After breakfast at our hotel, we jump on the shinkansen, for our first experience of Japan’s bullet trains. Moving at a speed of over 300 kms/hour, the train covers the near 400 km route between Osaka and Hiroshima in about 90 minutes.

On arrival, we will drop our bags off at our hotel and hop on the ferry for the scenic 45 minute ride to nearby Miyajima Island. Here, we can wander the island’s charming streets and forested paths, visit Itsukushima Shrine with its famous floating torii gate, especially spectacular at high tide and then stroll through Momijidani Park. For the rest of the afternoon, we can enjoy the island’s beaches, admire the local deer that roam free or time-permitting, even take the ropeway up to Mount Misen for views of the Seto Inland Sea.

In the late afternoon, we will return back to Hiroshima, where whoever wants will have the option of taking an evening walking tour (tip-based) around Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome, where our guide will be telling us the sad history of the city and how it was rebuilt, following the explosion of the Atomic Bomb in 1945. Visiting Peace Park in the evening is something quite special, as there is just a fraction of the people there and the quieter and calmer atmosphere allows you to reflect on the severity of one of the biggest man-made disasters of all time.

Accommodation: The Knot Hiroshima or similar

30th September:

Day 5 – Kyoto

Today we will have an early start to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, in what will inevitably prove to be an extremely moving experience.

After that, we will check out of our hotel and head to the train station for another shinkansen ride to Kyoto, Japan’s cultural capital, where we will be staying for the next 3 nights.

Accommodation: Hotel Higashiyama or similar

1st October:

Day 6 – Kyoto

We start our day with a visit to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. We will aim to get there bright and early to avoid the crowds.

From there, we will venture on to the nearby monkey park, which is home to over 120 wild Japanese macaques.

This will be our busiest morning in Kyoto, as we will also be taking in an array of temples, including Tenryu-Ji, before heading to northern Kyoto to see the breathtaking Golden Temple of Kinakaku Ji, as well as Ryoan-Ji, which is Japan’s most famous rock garden.

In the afternoon we will return to the centre to rest, before heading out in the late afternoon to explore Kyoto’s quiet backstreets and hidden temples. And who knows? While wandering through central Kyoto and the Gion area, you may even catch a glimpse of a geisha gliding through the lantern-lit streets.

Accommodation: Hotel Higashiyama or similar

2nd October:

Day 7 – Kyoto

Today is free for you to do as you please. Take a day trip to nearby Nara national park, famous for its concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites and its free-roaming deer or enjoy the unique experience of a traditional, Japanese tea ceremony.

Alternatively, you can simply discover the charm and tranquility of Kyoto and its surroundings at your own pace. Shop and eat in Nishiki Market, stroll down the cherry-tree lined pedestrian walk of the Philosopher’s Path, wander through parks and visit some more of the city’s unique temples, such as the breathtaking Kiyomizu-dera. For those with even more energy left in their legs, you can also head up to Fushimi Inari Taisha, famous for its thousands of red torii gates winding up the mountain.

In the evening, sip sake, savour some of the world’s best sushi and taste some authentic mochi, as you take in everything this truly unique city has to offer!

Accommodation: Hotel Higashiyama or similar

3rd October:

Day 8 – Hakone

We depart from Kyoto in the morning on another bullet train, this time heading towards Hakone, Japan’s premier hot spring (onsen) resort town, famous for its stunning views of Mount Fuji and leisurely sightseeing cruises across Lake Ashi.

Upon arrival, we will check-in at our Ryokan, before heading out for a quick lunch and to spend an hour or two admiring the outdoor sculptures and the Picasso Pavilion at the impressive Hakone Open Air Museum.

After that, we can return to our ryokan, where we can spend the rest of the afternoon making the most of our beautiful accommodation, with its complimentary tea and public onsens (hot baths).

Then it’s dinner time, which will be an experience in itself, as we will be treated to a full multi-course Kaiseki meal, before heading back to digest in one of the smaller private hot pools around the property.

Accommodation: Mizunoto or similar

4th October:

Day 9 – Tokyo

For those who want to (and why would you not?), we start the day with another plunge into our accommodation’s onsens. Then, another multi-course food experience awaits us for breakfast, before we spend the rest of the morning wandering around the beautiful town of Hakone, with its Tozan Cable Car and Ropeway to Owakudani.

After lunch, we will take our last train journey and arrive at the final stop of our trip, Japan’s indescribable capital; Tokyo.

The afternoon and evening is ours to get an initial taste of what Tokyo is all about, as we take a walk through Shinjuku, one of the city’s most lively areas, where you can find the neon chaos of Kabukicho, the tiny bar vibes of Golden Gai and the mini eateries in Omoido Yokocho Memory Lane.

Accommodation: The Knot (Shinjuku, Tokyo) or similar

5th October:

Day 10 – Tokyo

Today you can look forward to a full day of exploring Tokyo to the max! We will be stopping at an array of places, including the Meiji Shrine, the Imperial Palace, the Asakusa district, and of course in one of Tokyo’s most iconic neighborhoods, Shibuya. Feel the frenetic pace of Tokyo as you try to cross the world-famous pedestrian crossings.

And the day doesn’t end there! In the evening, we will get picked up for an evening tour, that will include stops at  two of Tokyo’s most authentic izakayas, frequented by locals only, where we will get to try some unique dishes, including horse sashimi, jellyfish and for those who dare, even whale. Unlimited drinks are available throughout our tour, which for those interested, will inevitably end with a final night of karaoke, one of the most must-do activities during your time in Japan!

Accommodation: The Knot (Shinjuku, Tokyo) or similar

6th October:

Day 11 – Tokyo

On your last full day, you are free to explore Tokyo as you wish! Whether that means revisiting a favorite neighborhood, discovering a new corner of the city, shopping for souvenirs, or simply soaking in the energy of the streets one last time. Take this opportunity to experience Tokyo at your own pace and create a memorable finale to your trip.

Extra activity suggestions for the day will be offered by Roady and we can of course make all necessary reservations for you too…

Options include visiting the Sumo stables to see the wrestlers train (please note that this event is not daily, so attendance depends on whether the event takes place on our specific dates), or joining a Street Kart event, as you turn the streets of Tokyo into your personal racetrack by riding through the heart of the city,  past neon lights and iconic landmarks on a real go-kart, while dressed in a wild costume.

Whatever you choose to do, we will make sure that your last final day in Tokyo is one that will live with you forever!

Accommodation: The Knot (Shinjuku, Tokyo) or similar

7th October:

Day 12 – Tokyo

Check-out from our hotel is at 10 am, but as we do not need to be at the airport for our flight home till late in the afternoon, we have half a day more to enjoy Tokyo and we have no intention of letting it go to waste…

After breakfast, we will head to Tsukiji Market to sample some final Japanese delicacies, such as fresh seafood and casual street bites and to get a final glimpse into Tokyo’s food culture.

Then, we will be visiting the amazing teamLab Planets exhibition, where interactive digital art surrounds you in an immersive, otherworldly setting that will stimulate the senses.

In the afternoon, we will head back at our hotel to pick up our luggage and get transferred by private minibus to Narita airport for our overnight return flight home.

FAQ

Is this trip for me?

This trip is for people who like adventure and who like to have fun and to make new friends. It will be a unique experience in one of the world’s most fulfilling destinations! We have no doubts that if you come with a relaxed and positive  mindset, you’ll have the trip of a lifetime!

It is important to understand that this is an adventure trip, and as such, there is always an element of the unexpected. Traveling in Japan is not like staying at the Hilton in London… a lot can happen, from jet-lag, to communication problems, to the food being completely different to what you are used to, to coming across all sorts of unfamiliar situations…

But it’s good that things are different, otherwise, it wouldn’t be worth leaving home. Also, good weather is unfortunately not a guarantee in Japan in October, as despite typhoon season having ended, bad luck can mean that we still experience rain, strong winds or even occasional travel disruptions.

It is also important that you know that there may be changes in the itinerary, if we deem it necessary due to unexpected weather. But all this said and done, what kind of a trip would it be without some adventure?

If you invite a friend to come on the tour, it is essential that you pass this information on to them. We want to make sure that everyone who comes along is aware of what to expect and that they join us with the right, adventurous mind frame that will create a healthy group dynamic!

What kind of rooms are we staying in?

We will be staying in twin rooms in 3 and 4 star hotels in central and hub locations.

If you are traveling alone, you will be paired with another traveler of the same gender.

If you are traveling as a couple, rest assured that you will get your own private room together.

What if I want a single room?

This is not something we offer on this particular trip, due to the high expenses involved.

Is international airfare provided?

Yes, Roady will arrange your return airfare from Cyprus to Japan (via Dubai), with Emirates (30 kgs permitted).

Can I go alone?

Of course! Most of our travelers sign up individually. They go to Japan alone and come back with 10 new friends.

Who will I share my journey with?

You’ll spend the trip with our tour leader, Marcos. You’ll also spend all the days with other travelers who have many things in common with you, like a passion for traveling, for adventure, for discovery … and who are looking for new emotions and unforgettable moments on this trip.
We know that age is just a number, but on the whole, we mostly have travelers from anywhere between 28 to 50 years old and we can assure you that the atmosphere is very fun and that you’ll end the trip with a new group of friends.

What is the exact number of travelers in the group?

It depends on the demand for that specific tour, but minimum 9 and maximum 14.

Is the group of travelers flying together?

Yes, as Roady will be arranging all your flights from Cyprus to Japan and back.

How do we meet at the airport?

We’ll take the data of all travelers and coordinate beforehand using WhatsApp so that we can arrange to share a ride to Larnaca airport, or to just meet there before flight departure.

Is there an age requirement?

You must be 23 years old or older. However, we try to put together a group, where we feel similar interests will be held. That is to say, similar age groups and dynamics. As a result, we personally speak to all potential travelers to make sure that they fit in with the environment that we wish to create.

Do I need to take any specific equipment?

No, no special equipment is necessary, though you may want to take a waterproof jacket with you in case of rain.

But don’t worry about any of that now! We at Roady, will be sending you a recommended packing list several weeks before departure to help you plan ahead.

Will I have any time for myself?

Of course! We hate tours that book every minute of your day. Our tour will be busy, but there will also be plenty of time to rest and disconnect.

Why are some of the meals not included?

We like to give you some time to be alone and seize every second of the day your own way. With that in mind, lunches will often take place  with the rest of the group, wherever we may be on that specific day, while for dinner on your free days (when we have no food tours) you can go wherever you want, either as a group or alone.

How many spots can I book at one time for the tour?

As many as you want. The maximum number of travelers is 13.

Can I save spots?

No, spots are only effectively reserved after payment.

Any doubts?

If you still have doubts, send us an e-mail at: hello@roadytravel.com
